FG Raises Alarm, Predicts Heavy Flooding In Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Bauchi, Katsina, Others

Awarenessinfohub has gathered that the federal ministry of environment has warned of imminent flooding in eleven states between July 16 and 20.

Usman Bokani, director of the National Flood Early Warning Centre under the environment ministry, issued a flood prediction notice on Wednesday.

According to the alert, states and locations expected to be affected include Adamawa (Mubi); Akwa Ibom (Edor, Upenekang, Oron, Eket); Borno (Ngala, Maiduguri); and Bauchi (Azare, Bauchi, Itas, Jama’are, Kafin-Madaki, Jama’a, Kari, Misau).

Others are Cross River (Calabar, Akpap); Jigawa (Miga, Gwaram, Diginsa, Ringim, Dutse); Katsina (Daura); Kano (Kunchi, Kano, Gezawa, Wudil, Bebeji, Sumaila, Tudun Wada); Plateau (Jos, Bukuru, Mangu); Yobe (Jakusko, Machina, Dapchi); and Zamfara (Bungudu, Gusau).

Bokani urged state governments and relevant stakeholders to take precautionary measures to reduce the impact of potential floods on lives and property.

The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) had earlier identified 30 states and the federal capital territory (FCT) as locations with high risk of flooding in 2025.

The agency added that 2,187 communities in 293 LGAs fall within the moderate flood risk states.

In 2024, flooding claimed 321 lives, affected over 1.37 million people, and displaced more than 740,000 across Nigeria.
